750 ha Surveyed at Villacoublay Military Airfield

Our teams carried out surveys using mobile laser scanning to support the client in creating a database containing all obstacles penetrating the airfield's Aeronautical Easement Surfaces.

Project Context

To obtain ILS (Instrument Landing System) CAT II certification for Villacoublay LFPV military airfield, the USID (French Defence Infrastructure Support Unit) sought to create a database containing all obstacles penetrating the airfield's Aeronautical Easement Surfaces.

The main challenge in obtaining CAT II certification for this presidential airport? Enabling precision instrument approaches and landings with visibility below 200 feet (61 m), allowing aircraft to land in poor visibility conditions.

The objective was to identify all high points (referred to as obstacles) affecting the PSA (Aeronautical Easement Plan), which comprises four surfaces: OLS (Obstacle Limitation Surface), OFZ (Obstacle Free Zone), OCS (Obstacle Clearance Surface) and OAS (Obstacle Assessment Surface).

Assignments Carried Out

To successfully complete the assignment, teams from our Rambouillet and Paris offices worked alongside our Innovation Department to survey no less than 750 ha using mobile laser scanning, two eBee fixed-wing drones and satellite imagery. Nearly one terabyte of data was acquired to accurately detect in 3D the obstacles penetrating the aeronautical easement surfaces.

Given the work carried out and the results achieved, the client chose to continue working with TT Géomètres Experts. This next phase involved exploring the development of dedicated digital tools for the client's team, based on the survey data collected. An obstacle visualisation tool was therefore developed to facilitate the management and use of this data.
