Mobile Laser Scanning and Data Processing for Renault's Tornado Autonomous Vehicle Project

Mobile Laser Scanning and Georeferencing of 17 km of Roads in Rambouillet

As part of the upcoming experimental deployment of the Tornado autonomous vehicle in the car park of the Bel-Air shopping centre in Rambouillet, Renault commissioned us to survey and process data for the roads covered by the project.

A point cloud containing several hundred million points was acquired using mobile laser scanning in a single day, while travelling at approximately 40 km/h.

Following data processing, the georeferenced point cloud was extracted. Using AutoCAD, we vectorised all key road features, including road markings, kerbs, signs, posts and parking spaces.

From this data, we were able to determine all possible vehicle trajectories across the road network, taking into account the different right-of-way priorities between vehicles.

All processing involved in-house developments designed to automate the input of tens of thousands of data points as much as possible. All these elements were then converted into a database and exported in a proprietary format developed by Renault for integration into its navigation system.

Following several adjustments and feedback from the French car manufacturer, the operational database was successfully integrated, alongside numerous other databases, into the autonomous vehicle system and contributed to the success of the project.
